1,5-Pentanediol (PDO) is a colorless oily liquid with a characteristic odour. It is miscible with water and organic solvents. It is obtained after treatment with the product mixture obtained by air oxidation of cyclohexane. PDO is a building block of saturated polyesters, unsaturated polyesters, and polyurethanes, and is a solvent for inkjet ink formulations. It is suitable for use in polyesters, polyester plasticizers and polyurethane soft segments for solvent-borne coatings (enamels, two-pack coatings, can coatings and coil coatings).

health hazard | 1,5-Pentanediol has no apparent health hazard properties. Acute toxicity is very low by all tested routes of exposure (oral, dermal and inhalation). It has no irritating or sensitizing effects. Limited repeated doses and long-term health or reproductive effects have produced themselves. More extensive data are available for the analogous substance 1,5-hexanediol. Based on the amount of information available, it is not expected to cause repeated doses or long-term health effects. The physical properties of 1,5-pentanediol are nothing to worry about. Its flammability is low. Therefore, its overall hazard potential to human health is very low. |
chemical properties | Clear colorless oily liquid |
use | 1,5-Pentanediol is mainly used as a chemical intermediate. Industrial exposure may result from direct contact. |
use | 1,5-Pentanediol was used as a reagent for the total synthesis of the nortriterpene natural product (+)-Rubriflordilactone A. 1,5-Pentanediol is also the starting material for the synthesis of Pseudomonate D Sodium (P839520); an antibiotic isolated from Pseudomonas fluorescens. |
definition | ChEBI: 1,5-Pentanediol is a primary alcohol. |

Flammability and explosiveness | uncategorized |
Security overview | Mildly toxic if swallowed. Irritating to skin and eyes. Combustible when exposed to heat or flame; can react with oxidizing substances. When extinguishing fire, use foam, carbon dioxide, dry chemical. Used as a plasticizer in cellulosic products and adhesives and in brake fluids. |
